Still my birthday month Saturday

Well, yes, it's still my birthday month, and if you know me at all you know I use that technicality through all of March in order to get people to pay for my drinks and maybe even buy me lunch.  Doesn't work so well toward the end of the month when it's other peoples' birthdays, but, I can always drop the facts and see what happens.
I'm overdue to talk about my birthday dinner, which was amazing.  We went to Dirt Candy in the East Village in Manhattan, where the owner claims it's not so much a vegetarian restaurant, but a vegetable restaurant.  It's true.  The menu is categorized by the featured vegetable in the dish, and can be ordered as its standard, decadent version, often with egg or dairy, but, every one of the dishes can be made into a very similar, sometimes even tastier vegan version.  Here's what we had. *Please note that these are not my photos this time.  These are from the restaurant's website.

SNACK:  We started out with a snack and had some jalapeƱo hushpuppies with maple butter, veganized.  I'm pretty sure that just means the maple butter was vegan.  They were fluffy and delicious and just the right amount of spiciness.

CARROT:  Then we shared an order of steamed BBQ carrot buns, vegan style, in a hoisin sauce, accompanied by a pile of sesame ginger and cucumber salad.  Amazing!  The BBQ sauce in the carrot buns was especially tasty and the salad was extra refreshing with a healthy helping of fresh ginger threads throughout.

BROCCOLINI: For my entree I chose the broccolini option, no veganization required, with crispy tofu in a orange buttery beurre blanc sauce, with deep fried orange segments.  I'd never had deep fried orange segments or anything that called itself a beurre blanc sauce, so this was pretty excellent.

CAULIFLOWER:  My date ordered the restaurant's play on the classic Chicken and Waffles, vegan style.  He said it was the best thing he's ever eaten ever, except for my cooking, of course!  The dish was battered cauliflower over waffles with a horseradish sauce and wild arugula.

DESSERT: We opted for the Nanaimo Bar for dessert, which is a sweet pea, mint, and chocolate ice cream bar.  I have a weakness for mint chocolate anything and I had to know what sweet pea ice cream was like.  It was pretty amazing and it went very well with the white peony tea I ordered at the end of the meal.

The End!  If you want to go to Dirt Candy in NYC, make sure you book your reservation several weeks in advance.  They can only seat 22 people at a time!

What I've been COOKin Wednesday

It's citrus salad time again.  There's a bunch of peak quality citrus available for great deals this time of year, so I invested in some luscious pink grapefruits, tart & juicy blood oranges, and some classic navel oranges.  Make up your vinaigrette, slice some shallot, maybe chop up some mint?  Wah-la.  What a beaut.
And in scape form:
And here is the aftermathscape of the endeavor --

Last night the request was spaghetti, so I went ahead and made it a deluxe: homemade sauce, browned tempeh crumbles with sauteed sliced cremini mushrooms, and steamed broccoli.  Doesn't look like much, but it was a hit.  And sitting on the couch eating a huge plate of spaghetti made me nostalgic for the livin with Miss Margraves days.  Those were some days!  :)

Tonight was all about comfort food.  So I made country fried tofu, used some fresh shiitake mushrooms to make a gravy, diced, spiced, and roasted some red potatoes and then lightly steamed some fresh kale and dressed it with braggs.

I must admit, a lot of this COOKing inspiration has come from Mr. Tony Cook: an extremely funky find by none other than GT Collins.  Apparently, Stones Throw's got Tony Cook's back and more importantly, have you heard anything so funky lately?

THRASHY THURSDAY is back!

I love how this freaky vampire dude thrashes the shit out of Wells Fargo Bank! Well done, Vlad. It's so true. A "Qualified Written Request" under RESPA (Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act) is what he's talking about, and the mortgage company is legally REQUIRED to acknowledge it within 10-20 days, and RESPOND to it within 60. If they do not, go get em'!

Side FX SATURDAY!

If you're nauseous, please be cautious about the remedy you choose.
Cause if you're splayin, no pill will stay in -
You'll need something up the caboose.

True Story (Minor TMI Warning): I always read the informational pamphlets when I get a new prescription.  It's the right thing to do.  Unfortunately, I'd had a couple bouts of serious nausea, and when I ended up having to woof cookies at two different instances during my 3 minutes with the doctor, he prescribed a conveniently effective nausea fighting suppository.  I never thought there'd be much harm done by some wax-coated Zofran up da butt, but when I saw the printed list of possible side effects, I knew it was fridge-worthy!  These are some REAL Side FX!  The drug is apparently an anti-psychotic with this wondrous alternate use.  It's called Prochlorperazine and the possibilities are almost endless:

Upon further research, the updated list of potential side effects should also include: pillrolling motions and cogwheel rigidity.

Thrashy Thursday!

The "-or" - "-er" combination is just lovely, and purely coincidental.
Kreator - Betrayer
Dekapitator - Faceripper

What I thought about Obama's Second State of the Union Address WEDNESDAY!

Oh, Obama.  Had me at hello, lost me at extended tax breaks for the richest of bee-yitches, wins me back with a beautiful State of the Union Address.
Highlights:
1. Muslim Americans are part of our American family.
2. Will not go back to the days when someone could be denied health coverage because of a preexisting condition.
3. No one will be prevented from serving the country they love because of who they love.
4. John Boehner trying so fucking hard not to cry @ 58:00
